“…but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs – heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, …” Romans 8:15-17.
Take a moment to imagine with me the image of the Perfect Father, hands outstretched, linked with the delicate hands of those he would call his. Being in this community, I am always reminded of this image of the Father. Grinning ear to ear, children readily walk up to you and slip their hand inside of yours. I’m reminded in these moments that, through Christ in me, I have the ability to be the Father in that moment to them. Often I will stoop low and ask that child their name. Many of the children will readily tell you they are “fine”, which is good, but what about their name? No. This is not normally asked, and if asked, not likely remembered. Today is different though, because I have the opportunity to make a big deal out of seeing them. I’ll exclaim, “SAM! IT’S SO GOOD TO MEET YOU TODAY!! Tell me about yourself. I want to know all about you; where you go to school, who your friends are, your dreams, what you like, what you dislike, …” The list goes on. It’s because of interactions like these that I know how much greater the true Father’s love is if I can so readily love in this way.
You see, I have seen the love of the perfect Father. I’ve seen it in my own father, my grandfather, my pastor, youth group leaders, mentors, and fellow brothers in Christ. I’ve personally experienced and seen that there is love out there that is faultless, authentic, and unrelenting. This is the Father’s love for us. This Christ-father walked the streets of towns, enabled the lame to walk, spoke life into dead, cold bodies, permitted sight, cured disease, and all of these in LOVE. I’m not just referring to the “love” that can easily be used to describe anything from coffee to a favorite show. I’m referring to handing-on-a-cross-for-you love. Yes, we have only seen glimpses of this Father, but what we have seen has been enough and more than we have ever needed or could ask for. This is the Father who calls us by name (Isaiah 49:1) and has planned our very days here on earth (Jeremiah 29:11). Praises. Simply praises to the Father.
To all our Journey team fathers – we are grateful for you and your willingness to embody the Father’s love to us. You have done well and God has used you to shape and mold well cared for men and women of God. In you, we have all seen a shimmer of the True Father, and for this we are thankful.
Tomorrow our Journey team will be departing from the second community. We have been blessed by our time working in three local schools and communities. Today we worshiped with our African brothers and sisters in three different churches; all of which were filled with joyous singing and dancing. God has provided another great day in East Africa. From our team and Choose to Invest, Happy Father’s day and have a most blessed day in the light and love of our Heavenly Father.
